Version) Alan was born in Freeport, Illinois. He traveled with his family to New Mexico when he was five. The Brockmeier family settled in the south valley area of Albuquerque, close to Isleta Indian Reservation. After graduating from Rio Grande High School in 1966, Alan went on to attend the University of NM for one year before being called to active duty status with the NM Air National Guard, 150th TFG. It was the Viet Nam era, but Alan received orders to Cannon Air Force Base. Upon de-activation in 1969, Alan attended the New Mexico State Police Academy, then located at Gloritta. He graduated and received his commission on December 1, 1969. His assignment was to State Police District #9, which encompasses 6 eastern NM counties, headquartered in Clovis. While a member of the NM State Police, Alan earned his AA degree in Criminal Justice and a BS degree in University Studies, with an emphasis in Criminal Justice and Psychology, from Eastern New Mexico University. Although he worked long hours with the NM State Police, Alan found time to teach night classes in criminal justice at ENMU for several years. Alan grew up in a strong Christian family. He attended the Evangelical of United Brethren Church in Albuquerque as a youngster. When it merged with the Methodist Church, the Brockmeier’s continued to attend the now United Methodist Church. As an adult, Alan attended churches from several Christian denominations. It was not until he met his future wife, Suzanne, that he was introduced to the Episcopal Church. After attending services at St. James’ Church in Clovis with Suzanne on Sunday, Alan declared that he had found the church he was looking for. He felt at home here. Alan and Suzanne were married in July 1994 and Alan was confirmed the following fall at St. James. Right from the start Alan was actively involved in the parish life of St. James. Therefore, it wasn’t too surprising to many that Alan asked for prayers of discernment, as he believed God was calling him into the ministry. When Alan applied and was accepted to the Diocese of the Rio Grande School for Ministry, he felt he must retire from the NM State Police to give his studies the time they needed. So, with 30 years of service, Alan retired from the NM State Police with the rank of Captain and District #9 Commander, to begin his studies with the School for Ministry. He received his Graduate Diploma in Christian Studies from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry, Ambridge, PA, and was ordained a Deacon in the Diocese of the Rio Grande by Bishop Terrance Kelshaw on 21 June 2003. The following July he was ordained to the priesthood. Alan & Suzanne’s daughter Deedra Hines and her husband Tripp are stationed at Offutt AFB, NE with the US Air Force. Although their daughter is married and not at home, the house is alive with four-legged children Bilbo, Tahmeeko, & J.C. Suzanne stays busy working as the Principal of Ranchvale Elementary School (K-6), and serving in a variety of ministries at St. James’s Church. Most importantly, Suzanne is Alan’s partner in ministry, supporting him as he is called to serve. As a member of the High Plains Team Ministry, Alan travels to local mission churches to bring them the Word of God and the Holy Eucharist once a month. He additionally serves as a Chief Warrant Officer in the NM Army National Guard, currently assigned to Taos. When not traveling, Alan enjoys serving the saints of St. James’ Church in Clovis. |
